The 2017-18 season finds Tammi Statewright in her 9th season at the helm of the Gateway High School girls basketball program. In her tenure as head coach, she has led her team into the postseason, won her conference, been named Coach of the Year, and helped guide close to a dozen athletes into playing careers at the postsecondary level. Her philosophy is based on the central belief that the lessons athletes learn on the court are the ones they carry for the rest of their lives. “Be better today than you were yesterday. And be better tomorrow than you were today. Push yourself to your limits – always strive for greatness.”

These words can often be heard in the gym at Gateway High School during a girls basketball practice. In 2009, I was afforded the privilege of taking over the girls basketball program at Gateway High School as the head coach. This position is part of my 21-year career as a coach, at various levels ranging from middle school to club, and in various sports, ranging from softball and track, to my true passion – basketball.

I bring a philosophy focused on helping the young ladies under my tutelage learn how to transfer the lessons they learn on the court to their lives beyond the court. And I have found this focus on constant improvement has helped young people excel in their endeavors; ranging from college athletics to the workforce.

It is this transference of lessons learned on the court, and the drive for a relentless pursuit of greatness, that I see as my true responsibility and privilege.

Ricky “Checko” Statewright has been an integral part of the Gateway High School girls basketball program since 2009. In that time, he has served as the driving force behind introducing athletes to the fundamentals of playing basketball at the high school level. Coach Statewright credits him with being the go-to team member to take care of any and all needs that might pop up. Additionally, Ricky has also helped build a pipeline between Aurora Hills Middle School, where he coaches and nurtures young athletes into embracing basketball, and Gateway. It is building this love for the game in young athletes with a combination of firm fundamentals that he sees as his greatest contribution. In the past, Ricky has coached with several club programs including the Colorado Hawks.

Has been a proud member of the Gateway family from 2004 to present. I spent 2yrs in a volunteer capacity until coach Betsy Allen invited me to be on her staff in 2006. It Was a special time in my life because at that time my younger sister La Carol Kennedy participated in the lady olympian basketball program and I was afforded the opportunity to watch her play every game and it was both an honor and a privilege; Also at that time it also inspired me to choose my battle colors orange and black. I’m sure every coach’s answer to this question is close to the same but I coach to not only teach young people the game of basketball but to also instill discipline and to teach lessons in life that the young people I encounter can take with them into their adult lives and beyond.
